The camp offers a number of adult training courses for Leaders in general, and activity Instructors in particular.

Note that courses will only be run on the dates advertised if there are sufficient students to make the course viable.


Basic First Aid

Basic First Aid is a (full) one day course which encompasses the First Responder course required for all Leaders.  It is a standard St. John's course, taught by their Instructors.  The certificate is valid for three years.

The course covers:

  • Managing the scene  -  safety considerations
  • The unconscious patient  -  the recovery position
  • CPR  -  rescue breaths and pulmonary compressions
  • Choking
  • Bleeding  -  significant blood loss
  • Shock
  • Muscular / skeletal injury
  • Burns and scalds

There will also be a brief discussion of other items such as heart attack, diabetes, head injuries, and hypothermia.

Certification is by continuous assessment.

The cost for this course is £25.00 which includes a First Aid booklet, coffee and refreshments, but excludes lunch.

Air Rifle Instructors' Course

The Air Rifle Instructors' course, recognised by the Scout Association,  is the National Small-bore Rifle Association (NSRA) Youth Proficiency Instructor's Diploma course.  It is a largely practical course taught over two days - usually one weekend.  Emphasis is on the safe handling of air rifles, and safe range management.

The course covers:

  • The law and, in particular, how it applies to young people
  • Safe and proper use of equipment
  • Range building
  • Shooting skills, breathing control, etc
  • Selection and maintenance of suitable equipment
  • The role and requirements of the Range Officer

Certification is by a practical assessment of the Range Officer's role on the second day.

The cost for this course is £70.00 which includes a course manual, coffee and refreshments, but excludes lunch.

Archery Instructors' Course

The Archery Instructors' course, recognised by the Scout Association,  is the Grand National Archery Society (GNAS) Leader's course.  It is a largely practical course taught over two weekends.

The course covers:

  • Safety, suitable rounds and forms of archery.
  • Shooting at up to 20 yards - style and consistency.
  • Teaching and adjusting basic technique.
  • Equipment - selection, maintenance, sources of supply.

Certification is by a practical assessment on the afternoon of the last day.

The cost for the course is £130.00 which includes a course manual, coffee and refreshments, but excludes lunch.

Climbing Instructors' Course

The climbing Instructor's course is designed for people wishing to instruct or supervise climbing and abseiling activities on man made climbing tower or walls.  It is a two day course, usually held over one weekend.  The first day's activities take place on the Kinver tower, the second day is held at Rhydd Covert campsite near Kidderminster.  (Transport can be arranged for this day if required.)  On the Saturday evening there is an optional visit to a local commercial wall.

The course is mainly practical work on the tower - please bring suitable clothing for the time of year.  All equipment is provided, but if you wish you may bring and use your own climbing equipment.

The course covers:

  • The Scout and Guide permit scheme for climbing and abseiling
  • The selection and maintenance of equipment
  • The importance of the correct fitting of harnesses and helmets
  • Understanding the needs of the group, taking into consideration age, ability, and experience
  • The safety of the Instructors and participants
  • The use of warm up sessions
  • Being able to set up safe and sound systems for both climbing and abseiling
  • Understanding the use of a releasable abseil, and being confident of using it in an emergency
  • Being able to belay in a safe and confident manner, and understand the precautions necessary when instructing belaying to participants
  • Knowing how to overcome common problems, including "stuck climbers"

Certification is held on a separate day, ideally after the participant has gained some experience working as an assistant to a qualified Instructor.  Details of these sessions will be discussed during the course.  There is a small additional charge for the assessment. The cost for the course is £60.00 which includes course notes, coffee and refreshment, but excludes lunch.  A separate  payment (currently £6) is required at the time for the optional visit to the commercial wall on the Saturday evening.

  • Overhead projector and screen
  • 35mm slide projector and screen
  • Flipcharts
  • Whiteboards
  • PC with DVD drive and running Microsoft Office (including Powerpoint)
  • Video projector and screen

If you wish to use any of the above equipment, please make your request known to the camp office at least 14 days prior to use.
